Chinese scammers are using search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques to subvert company details. Google's Picasa image hosting service is fast-becoming the new tool of choice for spammers to elude e-mail filters. The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is warning internet users of spam emails claiming to come from internet hit men. Spammers are stepping up their use of Shockwave Flash file redirects to avoid detection. Spammers are fans of the alphabet according to recent research – you’re going to start wishing your name was Zebedee.  

 

The first months of 2008 has seen spam levels rise with the economic situation and Olympics adding fuel to the fire. Most spam is sent to non-existent addresses, but that can still generate annoying messages for genuine users. Large-scale data breaches across both the private and public sectors dominated the news throughout the year. Rob Buckley looks back. "It's the economy, stupid." It worked for spammers now, and it will work for spammers in the future. When the subject of email security is mentioned, the first thought that comes to mind is "spam" or more appropriately "anti-spam."
