Data leakage prevention (DLP) seems to have been one of the hottest sectors of the IT security industry for the last three years.

Yet despite good growth rates, adoption has not lived up to the hype; it's unclear how much value customers are receiving and the overall market remains small. Every organisation has confidential data and there have been numerous high-profile instances of data being disclosed inappropriately, so what's going on?

The key to understanding the DLP market is in the problem being addressed.
