Blue Coat covers security for Gold Coast Council

Gold Coast City Council has deployed Blue Coat Systems’ ProxySG and ProxyAV appliances to provide Web security, policy control, reduce bandwidth consumption, speed application performance and protect against malware.

The Council had a requirement for Web filtering and a Web caching solution with a preferred anti-virus platform that also provided solid integration with Web filtering.

After a rigorous selection process, the Council chose Blue Coat, deploying Blue Coat ProxySG800, ProxySG400 and ProxyAV400, appliances to provide Web caching capabilities, security at the gateway and an authentication mechanism to control user access to the Internet.

The solution supports 3,500 users at two offices sites, about 60 sites and 15 libraries within the Council network.

Wayne Neich, regional sales manager, Australia and New Zealand for Blue Coat Systems said the Council uses ProxySG appliances to stop Peer-to-Peer (P2P) file sharing and manage the amount of streaming media being downloaded from the Internet.

All content is checked for viruses at the Internet gateway to protect Council resources from spyware, malware, viruses and worms.

“The Council also is able to add users to its network without a decrease in performance. Nine hundred users have already been added since installation with no performance degradation,” he said.
