Apple has posted an update for the iPhone and iPod touch. The 2.2 version update adds several features to both devices, as well as a host of security and stability improvements.

Users will now be able to use the Google street view function on the built-in Maps application for both handsets. The feature allows users to navigate city maps at a street level mode by equipping the maps with images taken from a specially-equipped vehicle.

The 2.2 update also ads the ability to download podcasts directly to the handset through iTunes. Until now, the feature had been absent from the player, though the company had blocked any App Store submissions which attempted to download podcasts, much to the ire of users.

Along with the new features, Apple issued several patches to help shore up security on the device.

The update addresses twelve vulnerabilities in both devices. Impacts from the flaws range from SMS message information disclosure weaknesses in the emergency call feature to remote code execution flaws in the device's handling of image files and web pages.

Users can obtain the update through both devices through iTunes. The updates will be offered when the user syncs the device with a Mac or PC.
