Hosted consumer email encryption product introduced by Marshal8e6

Marshal8e6 has introduced a new consumer email encryption product.

MailMarshal SendSecure will be delivered as a hosted service in partnership with Zix Corporation and will enable financial companies and healthcare providers to safely send encrypted emails to members of the public.

The launch follows the introduction of the MailMarshal Secure Email Server last year as a business-to-business product that was designed for the encryption of emails sent within large organisations and between partner organisations that are using digital signing and have an S/MIME gateway.

SendSecure removes the need for the customer to install any software or use digital signing to unencrypt the email at the receiving end. Using a S/MIME gateway and the same encryption software as the Secure Email Server, organisations can now also use SendSecure to encrypt emails to their consumer customers.

As SendSecure is a hosted service, the company claimed that customers only need a browser and an internet connection to receive and unencrypt messages.

Ed Rowley, field product manager, EMEA at Marshal8e6, claimed that the main difference between the new product and the existing MailMarshal is that it is a hosted service that requires limited action from the customer.

Rowley said: “With our partnership with Zix we take care of any updates, also organisations will protect themselves with gateway-to-gateway encryption but many don't have that luxury, so this allows the benefit in an encrypted fashion. It encrypts the traffic rather than the message and this is an architecture where the message is sent over HTTPS and no plug-ins are required.”

Rowley explained that to send an encrypted message via SendSecure, you put secure in the subject line and the recipient will receive a message informing them that they have a SendSecure message from the sender, with a link to the registration page with a secure password encouraged.

“If MailMarshal is looking for sensitive content then the message can be sent in an encrypted fashion, it can also be used for sending to webmail and it is a fall back for when encryption does not work”, said Rowley.
